The City of Los Angeles, California has announced it will reuse 100% of its wastewater by 2035, to ensure a secure water supply in the face of climate change.
The Today Show ran a news story about Mayor Eric Garcetti’s plan, which will mean that 70% of the water supply used by 4 million LA residents, will be purified recycled water.
Catchy headlines like ‘toilet to tap’ often come up when cities look at purified recycled water. The water industry often takes the chance to explain that the term isn’t accurate – it doesn’t tell the full story, of the advanced treatment processes that ensure the water meets drinking water standards before it is ever provided to customers. LA has developed its own nickname – ‘showers to flowers’.
Liveability fans will also love the fly fishing in restored sections of the LA river, right next to a highway. Beneficial reuse is what keeps the river flowing much of the time.
