There is no evidence that the coronavirus causing COVID-19 has been transmitted via wastewater (sewage) systems.

In some countries samples of wastewater have been collected from the wastewater network to track remnants of genetic material from the virus. This information can be useful to help identify how much virus might be present in the population. However these studies are not trying to test the ability of viruses in wastewater to cause the COVID-19 infection.

This fact sheet has been developed to help answer questions about wastewater and COVID-19 and has been reviewed by experts.
