WSAA continues to work with telecommunications carriers to improve the working arrangements between our sectors.
A Powers and Immunities Reference Group (PIRG) under the Department of Communications and Arts (DoCA) is leading the following actions:
- The development of a Code of Practice that would provide an agreed protocol between landowners and telco carriers for emergency and maintenance shutdown, particularly for installations under Schedule 3 of the Telecommunications Act.
- Developing a comprehensive database that will more easily allow identification of carrier equipment on sites.
- Discussion with Home Affairs and DoCA on options around changes to the criminal code – seeking to decriminalise the switching off of carrier equipment.
It is anticipated that the majority of these activities will be complete by mid to late 2020. Contact Greg Ryan for more information.
