Flushable products including wet wipes have been an ongoing concern for the urban water industry and with no international standard the International Water Services Flushability Group (IWSFG) has released a set of Publically Available Specifications.

The Specifications were developed by the water industry to provide clarity on what can be flushed.  They include a set of five criteria for a product to meet before they are suitable for flushing down the toilet.

As a foundation member of the IWSFG, WSAA was directly involved in representing the Australian water industry in developing and finalising the specifications. The specifications underwent two rounds of public comments, including from wipes manufacturers to ensure the standards were realistic and acceptable worldwide.

WSAA is also leading the development of a national standard through Standards Australia that will define the criteria for material suitable for toilet flushing, along with appropriate labelling requirements.
