Collaborative research plays a vital role in enabling the water industry to manage future challenges.

The different research funding and knowledge transfer models can vary significantly. As research investment fluctuates, the water industry could benefit from seeking agreement on underlying principles of good practice to design future collaborative research ventures.

The Smart Water Fund (SWF) is a ‘water industry-led’ collaborative research partnership, between the Victorian Water Industry and State Government. Established in 2002, the Fund invested $60 million in research over 14 years and initiated over 230 projects. In 2014 its Board elected to wind-up the Fund, providing an opportunity to review ‘lessons learnt’ and share findings with industry stakeholders, ensuring these lessons benefit future research.

In this workshop, presenters from Water Research Australia, WSAA and Alluvium, alongside those of the SWF will set the scene, outlining how research can be used effectively in the future. This information will stimulate later discussion aimed at developing common ground on the effective principles of collaborative research, through sharing learnt experience. When complete, it is envisaged these principles will be published to a national audience, assisting future collaborative research. Many organisations are reviewing their research strategies and will gain insight from workshop participants and have an opportunity to contribute to agreed research principles to benefit future research endeavours.

This workshop will be held from 9:00-10:30am, Thursday 12 May 2016 at Ozwater'16.
